UGC NET Paper 1 unit 7: Data Interpretation
Data Interpretation is unit 7 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.
What the unit covers
Data Interpretation is about reading figures and drawing correct conclusions from them. Part of it is knowledge about data: where data comes from, how it is collected and classified, and the difference between quantitative data, which can be counted or measured, and qualitative data, which describes qualities. The syllabus also names data and governance, the way governments gather and use data.
The larger part is skill: reading a table, a bar chart, a pie chart, a line chart or a histogram and working out totals, differences, ratios, averages and percentage changes from it. Questions come as a set, one display of data followed by several questions on it, so the first minute is best spent on what the display shows, its units and what each row or column means, before any calculation.
Much of the arithmetic is the same as in Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude, so the two units are worth practising together. A habit that helps in both is to write down the one or two figures a question needs before working with them, rather than reading across the whole display again for each step.
How our papers set it
