UGC NET Paper 1 unit 6: Logical Reasoning

Logical Reasoning is unit 6 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.

What the unit covers

Logical Reasoning is about how conclusions follow from what is given. It starts with the structure of an argument, its premises, its conclusion and the link between them, and with how to tell a valid argument from one that only sounds convincing.

Categorical statements, of the forms 'all', 'no', 'some' and 'some are not', and the ways they relate to one another are a large part, often shown on the traditional square of opposition. The unit separates deductive reasoning, where true premises guarantee the conclusion, from inductive reasoning, which only makes a conclusion likely, and it covers analogies and the use of Venn diagrams to test what follows from a set of statements. Common fallacies, the errors that make a bad argument look good, must be recognised by name.

A part of its own is Indian logic: the pramanas, the classical means of valid knowledge such as perception, inference and testimony, the structure of an inference, and the fallacies of inference that the Indian schools described. This part is new to many candidates, so it is worth reading on its own before practising questions on it.
