UGC NET Paper 1 unit 8: Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is unit 8 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.

What the unit covers

Information and Communication Technology covers the everyday vocabulary and services of computing. It starts with the common terms and abbreviations: hardware and software, memory and storage, input and output devices, file formats and units of data.

It then covers the internet and its relatives: how the internet works, what an intranet is, e-mail, and audio and video conferencing. Our questions also touch on staying safe online. A further part is about the digital initiatives in higher education, the government platforms for online courses and other services meant for students and teachers, and the last part is ICT in governance, the use of computers and networks to deliver public services and keep records.

None of this needs programming. What it needs is the meaning of terms and the ability to tell similar ones apart, such as two kinds of memory or two ways of sending a file. Because the questions turn on exact terms, it pays to read each one for what exactly is asked rather than pick the first familiar word among the options.
