UGC NET Paper 1 unit 4: Communication
Communication is unit 4 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.
What the unit covers
Communication looks at how messages pass from one person to another and what helps or blocks them. It begins with the meaning of communication and its basic process: a sender, a message, a channel, a receiver and the feedback that closes the loop. It then sorts communication into types: verbal and non-verbal, formal and informal, between two people, in a group and through mass media, and across cultures.
Non-verbal signals such as gesture, posture, eye contact and the use of space carry much of the meaning of face-to-face talk, so they are a regular topic. The unit asks what makes communication effective, listening and empathy among it, and names the barriers that get in the way: noise, language, assumptions, emotions and differences of status or culture.
Classroom communication has a place of its own, since teaching depends on it: how a teacher explains, questions and listens, and how students respond. The unit ends with mass media and society: what newspapers, radio, television and digital media do for the public, and the influence they have on opinion and behaviour.
