UGC NET Paper 1 unit 3: Comprehension

Comprehension is unit 3 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.

What the unit covers

Comprehension is the one unit with no topic list. The syllabus says only that a passage is given and questions are asked on it, so the unit tests reading rather than knowledge. The passage can be on any subject, and everything needed to answer is in the text itself. Outside knowledge can even mislead, because the question is what the passage says, not what is true elsewhere.

The usual questions ask for the main idea or the best title, a detail stated in a particular sentence, what follows from the passage though it is not said in so many words, the author's tone or attitude, and the meaning of a word or phrase as it is used there.

A sound way to work is to read the questions first, then the passage once with care, and to check each option against the lines it depends on. Options that are true in general but not supported by the passage, or that go further than the author does, are the usual traps. Because all the questions share one passage, a careful first reading is time well spent.
