UGC NET Paper 1 unit 1: Teaching Aptitude
Teaching Aptitude is unit 1 of 10 in the UGC NET Paper 1 syllabus. The syllabus notes that five questions of 2 marks are set from each unit, so it carries 10 of the 100 marks. Here is what it covers and how our papers set it: 5 questions in each of our 8 papers.
What the unit covers
Teaching Aptitude is about the craft of teaching rather than any one subject. It starts with what teaching is for: helping learners move from remembering facts, through understanding how they connect, to reflecting on them and using them in new situations. Those three levels come up often, so it helps to be able to say which level a classroom activity aims at.
The unit then looks at learners, above all what adolescents and adults bring with them: earlier knowledge, motives and the ways they differ from one another. It asks what makes teaching work or fail, from the teacher and the learner to the material, the classroom and the institution around them.
A large part is about methods: teacher-centred ones such as the lecture and the demonstration, learner-centred ones such as discussion and projects, and the online courses offered on platforms such as SWAYAM and as MOOCs. Teaching support systems, from the blackboard to digital tools, have their place too. The unit ends with evaluation: why learners are assessed, the difference between checking progress during a course and judging it at the end, and newer practices such as computer-based testing.
